W. Robert Gold
Managing Director, Focus, LLC
Robert Gold was trained as a lawyer
and has almost 15 years worth of experience in structuring and executing
transactions on his own behalf and on behalf of his clients. He
has represented a wide range of clients in numerous fields.
His legal practice was primarily focused on tax, corporate and
securities matters. His primary area of expertise was on tax-related
issues, with a particular concentration on structuring businesses
and transactions utilizing partnerships and other flow-through entities.
Mr. Gold’s legal practice also involved providing corporate
advice, particularly ownership-transition planning and execution
as well as on governance issues, and providing securities advice,
primarily on syndications and other private placements. While Mr.
Gold’s clients included companies of various sizes, he focused
his practice on family-held and middle-market enterprises.
Mr. Gold’s clients were involved in a wide variety of businesses,
but were primarily concentrated in real estate development, manufacturing
and intellectual property, and these clients were at various stages
of their life-cycles, from start-ups in nascent industries to mature
companies in established markets.
Prior to joining Focus, Mr. Gold was a partner in XAltitude, LLC.
XAltitude makes investments, with capital partners, in companies,
injects new technologies into these targets and then acts as an
operating partner. XAltitude has been involved with sole-source
government suppliers as well as several technology-related start-up
companies. At the same time, Mr. Gold assisted in the sale of several
intellectual property portfolios and advised clients on legal and
operational issues facing their businesses.
Mr. Gold served as Director of Legal Affairs for Ocean Tomo, LLC,
an intellectual property merchant banc, where he was responsible
for all legal issues facing the company, including regulatory, real
estate and employment matters. He was also responsible for managing
the firm’s relationships with its outside counsel. While at
Ocean Tomo, Mr. Gold was also instrumental in the firm’s Corporate
Finance Department, which specialized in the sale of valuable portfolios
of intellectual property for Fortune 100 companies and others.
Previously, Mr. Gold practiced law with Sachnoff & Weaver (now,
Reed Smith) where he was a partner in the tax group. Prior to that,
he was with Schiff, Hardin & Waite and Shefsky & Froelich.
Mr. Gold holds a B.B.A. from the University of Michigan and a J.D.
from Northwestern University School of Law, and is a member of the
Illinois Bar.
